The Maori name for Jade is Pounamu, and the local name is Greenstone, When the early European explorers reached New Zealand in the 18th century they called it Greenstone (the literal translation of Pounamu) not realising it was in fact Nephrite Jade. Found only in the South Island, Jade is a metamorphic stone formed under extreme heat and pressure. It was carried onto lowland areas by glaciers of the last ice age. Prized by the Maori for its colour, translucent properties and its strength, Greenstone was fashioned into tools, weapons and ornaments. Today’s Jade industry carries on the same traditions in a more contemporary way.
